Tokyo in Photos: 35 photos to inspire you to explore Japan's capital
Japan is a country unlike any other. A melting pot of ancient culture and tradition meets new-age technology and modernity. From the frenetic pace of Shinjuku’s neon-tinted laneways to the quiet of the sacred shrines, Japan is a country of contrasts. Known for having one of the world’s largest centenarian populations, we can learn a lot from the way the Japanese carry out their lives.
While many are familiar with the high-energy rhythm of locales including Shinjuku, Harajuku and the busiest pedestrian crossing in the world in Shibuya, there’s a quieter side to Japan’s capital city. A side that is filled with centuries of tradition, a peaceful way of living and a far more subdued pace. Izakaya’s (traditional Japanese pubs) hold barely enough space for five patrons, tiny ramen bars are nestled behind noren (vertical fabric hung in front of restaurant and shop doors) and the smell of grilled meat is carried from the smoke wafting from open-air grills.
To share even just a little of this with you, I’ve pulled together a photo diary of our time in Tokyo to share even just a slither of the beauty the city offers.
